Critical IRA Deadlines for October 2025: What Investors and Advisors Need to Know

IRA Deadlines

As 2025 moves forward, retirement savers and financial advisors must pay close attention to three critical IRA deadlines in October that can make or break a client’s retirement strategy. Missing these deadlines could lead to lost opportunities, unnecessary penalties, or avoidable excise taxes. Here’s what you need to know:

October 1, 2025: Deadline to Establish a SIMPLE IRA Plan

Small business owners who want to set up a new SIMPLE IRA plan for 2025 must act before October 1. This deadline allows employees to defer salary and receive employer contributions for the current tax year. Advisors should be proactive in finalizing these plans now, ensuring clients don’t miss out on critical funding opportunities.

October 15, 2025: Deadline to Correct Excess IRA Contributions

For clients who made an excess contribution to a traditional or Roth IRA in 2024, October 15, 2025, is the last chance to correct the mistake without penalty—provided the 2024 tax return (or valid extension) was filed by April 15, 2025. Correcting excess contributions, along with any earnings, avoids the 6% excise tax, which can compound each year the error goes unresolved.

October 15, 2025: Deadline to Recharacterize IRA Contributions

If an investor contributed to a Roth IRA but later discovers they were ineligible due to income limits, or decides a traditional IRA is a better fit, they have until October 15, 2025 to recharacterize the contribution. This flexibility remains a powerful correction tool for eligible contributions, though it does not apply to Roth conversions completed after 2017.
